Dean Ties Career Goals Record; Mustangs Roll Wildcats

Box Score

MARSHALL, MINN.:
Joelle Dean scored her 27th career goal early in the first half, sending the Southwest Minnesota State soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Wayne State.  She moves into a tie for first place all-time in goals scored at SMSU with Nadia AbuAyed (2001-04).  The goal was also the game-winner, moving her into first place all-time by herself with seven career game-winning goals.

The Mustangs improve to 3-11-2 overall for the season and 2-4-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.  The Wildcats drop to 1-13-2 and 0-7-0 in the NSIC.

Tatum Borstad scored her third goal of the season on a free kick from 35 yards just over two minutes into the match.  Dean followed just six minutes later on a header from Ellen Diekemper to put the Mustangs up 2-0.  SMSU took a 3-0 lead into the half after Ashley Elbers found the net from about 40 yards out on the right side for her first career goal.

Cait Miller scored less than a minute into the second half, tapping in a pass from Heather Holmes.  The goal was also Miller's first career score.

Wayne State scored on an own goal with just over six minutes left in the match as a Southwest defender tried to clear a ball that got past Mustang goalkeeper Kayla Borstad, but accidentally deflected it into the net.  Borstad made four saves on the day.

The Mustangs close out the regular season on the road next weekend when they travel to Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, Oct. 27 and MSU Moorhead on Sunday, Oct. 28.
