Mustangs Fall In Five Games to Wayne State

WAYNE, NEB.:
  Wayne State College rallied from down two games to one on Wednesday night and defeated No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State 30-25, 28-30, 30-15, 25-30, 15-11 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball Wednesday night in Wayne, Neb.

The loss drops SMSU to 20-6 overall, 11-3 NSIC, while WSC improves to 17-10, 9-5 NSIC.  The loss also drops SMSU two matches behind Concordia in the loss column in the NSIC and nearly eliminates the Mustangs from a chance of winning the conference regular season title.  SMSU is now just one match ahead of third place Winona State in the standings.

SMSU finished with a .126 team-hitting percentage (76 kills, 47 errors, 230 attacks) in the match, while holding the Wildcats to a .120 hitting percentage (52 kills, 26 errors, 216 attacks).

SMSU was led by Erin Contons who had a personal season-high of 30 kills with a team-high .276 hitting percentage.  She also tallied a personal season-high of 27 digs. 

Three other Mustangs recorded double-digit kills as Tricia Ingvalson had 17 with a .205 hitting percentage and Laura Hegerle and Leah Ashburn had 12 and 11 each.

On defense, SMSU had three players earn 20 or more digs.  Contons led the way with 27, as Sarah Quiram dug up 23 and Hegerle recorded 22.  Lauren Swain rounded it out with 19. 

Sara Graf had another double-double with a career-high 66 set assists and 18 digs. 

The Wildcats out-blocked the Mustangs 24-to-12 in the match,  while Emily Schroeder had 20 kills, 13 digs and 13 blocks to led WSC.

SMSU will be back in action Friday when they host Minnesota Crookston at 7 p.m.
