SMSU Drops Bemidji State in Three

BEMIDJI, MINN.: The No. 8 Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team defeated Bemidji State 3-0 (30-23, 31-29, 30-17) in Friday evening in Bemidji.  The win improves SMSU to 16-4 overall and 7-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.  BSU drops to 6-8 overall and 3-8 in the NSIC.

Four Mustangs had double digit kills, including Erin Contons with 18, Leah Ashburn with 12 and Laura Hegerle and Tricia Ingvalson with 11 each.  Ashburn had a team-high .478 hitting percentage.  Sara Graf had 52 set assists with no ball handling errors.  Leading the way defensively was Sarah Quiram with 23 digs.  Contons added 13 digs.

SMSU hit .409 in the first game and won 30-23, despite BSU hitting .310.  In a close second game that went to 31 points, SMSU hit .315 to BSU's .231.  The Mustangs then held Bemidji to a -.094 hitting percentage in the final game, coasting to a 30-17 win to close out the evening.

Southwest travels to Minnesota, Crookston for a match Saturday afternoon.
