Erin Contons led the Mustangs with 14 kills

SMSU Sweeps Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, IOWA:  The No. 10 ranked Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs were led by Erin Contons 14 kills in the sweep over Upper Iowa University on Saturday afternoon in Fayette, Iowa.

Game scores of the match were 30-17, 30-28, and 30-25.  With the victory the Mustangs improve to 24-6 overall and 15-3 in the NSIC while Upper Iowa ends their season with a 4-26 overall record and 0-18 conference record.

The Mustangs will now host the first round of the NSIC tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 6 playing University of Mary in the the PE Gym at 7 p.m.

SMSU had two players record double-digit kills as Contons led the team with a double-double performance of 14 kills and 11 digs.  Krystal Schwanke was second on the team with 10 kills.  She had a .412 hitting percentage with only three errors in 40 attempts.  Leah Ashburn had 9, Laura Hegerle added 8 and #Tory Brouwer had a career high six kills.

SMSU had a .279 hitting percentage while UIU hit .207 and were led by Beth Deutmeyer's 13 kills. 

Defensively, the Mustangs were led by Contons with 11 digs and Quiram with 10.  Sara Graf set up the hitters having 44 set assists, while having a .600 hitting percentage with three kills and six digs.

SMSU will now be back in action at home on Tuesday playing Mary in the first round of the NSIC tournament.
