Wheelchair Opens Season with 1-3 Weekend

MARSHALL, MINN.: The Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team opened its season with a 1-3 record this past weekend.  The Rolling Mustangs defeated the University of Illinois women 49-37 on Friday morning, before falling 73-39 Illinois' men.  Friday's nightcap was a 98-36 loss to defending national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater.  Saturday, SMSU lost a close one 62-57 to Edinboro (Pa.).

Nathan Peitz led SMSU with 21 points against Illinois' women, while Christian Ekunwe chipped in 12, followed by Evan Thorn with 10.  The Mustangs jumped off to a 21-13 halftime lead, despite shooting just 33 percent fro mthe field.

Against Illinois' men, Peitz and Thorn each led the way with 11 points.  The Fighting Illini shot 46 percent, compared to just 29 percent for SMSU.

Nathan Carruth and Thorn led against Wisconsin-Whitewater with 10 points each.  UWW drained 9-of-18 three-pointers and out-rebounded SMSU 50-21.  UWW also had 22 points in the paint and scored 29 points off of turnovers.

The final game of the weekend for SMSU was its best offensive output.  Thorn drained 22 points, followed by Peitz with 15 and Carruth with 12.  The Mustangs made a great effort, trying to come back from a 34-21 halftime deficit, but had three starters foul out.

SMSU is off until Nov. 30-Dec. 1 when it travels to Whitewater, Wis., for five games in two days.
