Krenske's Big Second Half Leads SMSU to Victory Over No. 14 St. Cloud State

Box Score

MARSHALL, MINN.: Travis Krenske scored 16 of his team-high 18 points in the second half to lead the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs to an 82-68 non-conference victory over No. 14 St. Cloud State on Thursday evening.  Scott Roehl carried the team in the first half, with nine of his career-high 13 points.

The win was SMSU's first over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 18 South Dakota on Dec. 31, 2005.  It also marked the Mustangs' first 8-3 start since 1999-2000.  SCSU drops to 8-2 overall this season.

The Mustangs went on a 9-0 run just inside the 10-minute mark of the first half, sparked by four points from Matt Fletcher and a three-pointer by Andy Beilke to take a 25-15 lead with 6:51 left in the first half.  SMSU carried the momentum to a 39-28 halftime lead.

Southwest stretched its lead to 18 in the first five minutes of the second half, but SCSU's David Dreas carried the Huskies back into the game with eight points in a five-minute stretch from 13:11 to 8:02 of the second half.  St. Cloud then cut the lead to seven with 6:50 left, but Krenske answered with a three-pointer and that was as close as SCSU would get.  Krenske scored 14 points in the final nine minutes to keep SMSU in control.

Roehl added six rebounds to go with his 13 points.  Matt Fletcher connected for 14 points as well.  Ross DeMasi and Andy Beilke each poured in eight points, while DeMasi tied Roehl for the team lead with six rebounds.

Dreas scored a game-high 26 points for SCSU on 11-of-20 shooting.

SMSU plays next on Dec. 29 when it travels to Boca Raton, Fla., to face Lynn at 6 p.m.
