SMSU Rallies Back to Defeat Regis (Colo.) 3-2

SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF.:  Sophomore Leah Ashburn had a game-high and career high 22 kills to help lead the Mustangs to the 3-2 victory over Regis University in the Coyote Classic held in San Bernardino, Calif. on Friday evening.

SMSU, now 2-0 overall, fell in the first two games by scores of 30-25 and 30-27 before rallying back to win the next three games.  The Mustangs defeated Regis 30-19 in game three, 30-13 in game four and finished winning the final game 15-7.

The Mustangs had five players record double-digit kills as Ashburn led the way with 22 and a .457 hitting percentage.  Senior Erin Contons tallied 20 kills while, Tricia Ingvalson added 12 and Laura Hegerle and Krystal Schwanke each had 10.

Mustang setter, Sara Graf recorded 62 set assists and 10 digs in the victory.  SMSU's defense was led by Sara Quiram who had 20 digs on the night.  Hegerle and Contons achieved double-doubles as they each added 16 and 15 digs respectively. 

As a team Southwest had a .313 hitting percentage and 79 kills, while holding Regis to a .149 percentage and 52 kills.  The Mustangs finished with 12 team blocks and 12 service aces.

SMSU will be back in action tomorrow when they face #4 UC San Diego at  2 p.m. (CDT) and then finish the Coyote Classic facing third-ranked UC San Bernardino at 9:30 p.m. (CDT).
