MARSHALL, MINN.: The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team dropped its season opener on Friday afternoon, 4-0 to the University of South Dakota at Mustang Field.
South Dakota scored twice in the first 23 minutes of the match, but SMSU kept it close until an errant kick by an SMSU defender sent the ball into its own net, making the score 3-0 in favor of USD with 26 minutes left in the match. South Dakota added another goal in the 83rd minute.
The Coyotes scored their first goal in the ninth minute on a goal by Angela O'Loughlin. Their second came as a result of a corner kick by Katie Whithorn as her corner set up Katie Freeman for the goal. After the SMSU kick into its own net in the 64th minute, Hailie Meyer put the match away with the USD's fourth and final goal of the day.
Kayla Borstad made 10 saves in the net for SMSU. The Mustangs recorded three shots on goal in the match, with Ellen Diekemper, Kate Voigt and Liz Judkins each recording one.
SMSU travels to St. Cloud State on Sunday, Aug. 26 for a 1 p.m. match with the Huskies.
