Late Surge by St. Cloud State Drops Mustangs

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, MINN.: Sophomore Heather Holmes found the back of the net twice, but it wasn't enough as St. Cloud State rallied in the final 30 minutes to defeat Southwest Minnesota State, 4-2 on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops SMSU to 0-2 for the season. For Holmes, the goals were the first two of her career, and the first two for the season for SMSU.

The Huskies scored twice in the first 21 minutes of the match, the second goal coming on a penalty kick. But Holmes brought SMSU back with her first goal of the day in the 42nd minute when Ellen Diekemper and Lisa Fleming set her up.  Less than four minutes into the second half Holmes found the net again, this time on an assist from Kate Voigt.

But SCSU rallied scoring at the 59:58 mark and again with just under 10 minutes left in the match to put SMSU away.  Kayla Borstad made seven saves in goal for the Mustangs.  SMSU recorded eight shots on net, let by Ashley Elbers, Jessica Curl and Holmes with two each.

The Mustangs play next at the University of North Dakota on Saturday, Sept. 1 at noon.
