SMSU Erin Contons and Leah Ashburn were named to the Premier Classic All-Tournament team

#25 SMSU Falls in a Close Battle with #2 Minnesota Duluth in Championship Game of Premier Tournament

No. 2 ranked Minnesota Duluth's Vicky Braegelmann had 23 kills and a .432 hitting percentage, to help the Bulldogs defeat #25 Southwest Minnesota State 3-1 (30-25, 29-31, 23-30, 17-30) in the championship game at the Premier Tournament held on the campus of Regis University in Denver, Colo.

The Mustangs pulled out to an early lead winning the first game of the match but #2 UMD was able to rally back to win the next three games for the victory.  With the loss SMSU falls to 6-2 overall while Minnesota Duluth improves to 7-1.

Southwest's hitting attack was led by sophomore Leah Ashburn who had a match-high 18 kills as she had 35 total attempts and only four errors for a .400 hitting percentage.  Two other Mustangs also posted double-digit kills as Laura Hegerle pounded down 14 and Erin Contons was close behind tallying 13.  Setter Sara Graf set up the hitting attack recording 49 set  assists while also digging up six balls.

Contons had a team-high 11 digs in the match while Tiffani Burch and Kasey Uran added nine and eight respectively.

As a team, UMD had a .312 hitting percentage with 77 kills, 27 errors on 160 attempts, while SMSU was held to a .173 hitting percentage with 56 kills and 28 errors in 162 attempts.  The Mustangs battled close as they tallied just one block less then Duluth as SMSU had 11 and UMD recorded 12.

SMSU's Contons and Ashburn were named to the Premier Classic All-Tournament team for their performances throughout the weekend.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Sept. 8th when they host their home opener versus #21 Wayne State, played in the PE Gym located in Marshall, Minn. beginning at 4 p.m.
