MARSHALL, MINN.: No. 6 ranked Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs took it to No. 15 Minnesota State, Mankato defeating the Mavericks in three games (30-20, 30-25, 30-20) on Tuesday night in Marshall, Minn.
The Mustangs improve to 11-2 overall while giving MSU Mankato their second loss of the season as they fall to 12-2 overall.
Minnesota State Mankato only hit .070 percent in the match compared to SMSU's .284 hitting percentage. Sophomore Leah Ashburn led Southwest with a career-high .647 hitting percentage as she tallied 11 kills on 17 attacks recording zero errors.
SMSU's senior, Erin Contons led the team in kills as had 18 and recorded her eighth double-double on the season having 13 digs. Sophomore Laura Hegerle also added double digit kills with 10 in the contest.
Sara Graf led the team in sets with 44 total, while Sarah Quiram was second on the team with 10 total digs.
SMSU out-blocked MSU Mankato 11 to eight and had 46 digs compared to the Mavericks 34.
Southwest will be back in action this weekend as they travel to face conference opponents. On Friday the Mustangs will face MSU Moorhead at 7 p.m. and then will take on No. 4 ranked Concordia St. Paul on Saturday at 6 p.m.
