Mustangs Fall to No. 21 Winona State

WINONA, MINN.: The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 21 Winona State in a non-conference match on Sunday.  Southwest falls to 1-7-1 on the season, while Winona improves to 8-2.

SMSU was out-shot 20-3, but goalkeeper Kayla Borstad kept the Mustangs in the game, making eight saves on the day.

Sophomore Jessica Curl had all three shots for the Mustangs, with two on goal.

Holly Sutton found the net in the 20th minute for WSU to score the game-deciding goal on assists from Gina Florian and Michelle Shannon.

SMSU returns to action next weekend as it opens the NSIC season by hosting Minnesota, Crookston at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29 and Bemidji State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30.
