No. 4 SMSU Downs Upper Iowa in Three

MARSHALL, MINN.: 
The No. 4-ranked Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs had a season-high .400 team hitting percentage to led them to a 3-0 victory over Upper Iowa University (30-13, 30-19, 30-18) on Friday night in Marshall.

With the win the Mustangs remain undefeated in the conference with a 6-0 record and 14-3 overall record while Upper Iowa now has a 0-6 NSIC record and are 4-12 overall.

SMSU's senior Tricia Ingvalson had a great night as she recorded a career-high .714 hitting percentage slamming down 10 kills in 14 attempts with zero errors.  Freshman Krystal Schwanke was a strong hitting force for the Mustangs tying her career-high with 12 kills.  She had just one error in 21 attempts for a .524 hitting percentage.   Erin Contons had a team-high 13 kills while Leah Ashburn added seven.

Southwest defensive effort was spread out as Contons had nine digs while Sara Graf and Laura Hegerle had six and five respectively.  Graf led the team with 35 set assits.

The Mustangs forced Upper Iowa to hit just .051 in the match allowing only one player to have double-digit kills as UIU's Beth Deutmeyer tallied 10.  SMSU out-blocked the Peacocks 11.5-to-5 as the Mustangs were led by Schwanke who had seven blocks (6 assisted, 1 solo).

SMSU will be back in action tomorrow as they play conference opponent Winona State University in the PE Gym at 4 p.m.
