Mustang Soccer Wins Conference Opener in Double Overtime

Box Score

MARSHALL, MINN.:
Jessica Curl scored on a free kick from 20 yards out with four second left in double overtime to give Southwest Minnesota State a 4-3 win over Minnesota, Crookston in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener for both teams.  Strong winds, gusting to over 40 mph, played a big factor in the match, as six of the seven goals were scored when teams were playing with the wind.  SMSU improves to 2-7-1, while UMC is now 2-9-0 overall.

SMSU led 3-0 when UMC's Samantha Welch scored off a corner kick in the 76th minute.  The Golden Eagles added another goal seven minutes later and tied the match with under 30 seconds left in regulation.

UMC out-shot SMSU 22-20 for the day after being out-shot 13-2 in the first half.  The Golden Eagles had four shots (two on goal) in the first overtime, but Kayla Borstad came up big in the net to extend the match another 10 minutes.  After a foul by Crookston with under 30 seconds left, Curl set up for a free kick just outside of the box and found the top-left corner of the net for the game-winner with four seconds left on the clock.

Ellen Diekemper had an excellent day for SMSU, scoring two goals in the first 16 minutes of the match.  Her second came on a breakaway as she pulled ahead of the defenders and drove the majority of the field on her own.  Curl and Tatum Borstad assisted on Diekemper's two goals.  Joelle Dean found the net into the wind on a header off a cross by Heather Holmes in the 49th minute to give SMSU a 3-0 lead.  The match was Dean's first of the year after coming off an injury.

Kayla Borstad made 10 saves in goal on the day.

SMSU hosts Bemidji State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mustang Field.
