No. 4 SMSU Stunned by Winona State in Five Games

MARSHALL, MINN: 
The No. 4-ranked Southwest Minnesota State suffered a tough loss today at home as Winona State upset the the Mustangs in five games (30-22, 30-18, 24-30, 28-30, 10-15).

This marks SMSU's first conference loss as they fall to 6-1 in the NSIC and are now 14-4 overall.  Winona State now posts a 11-8 overall record and 4-3 conference record.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead winning the first two games but WSU fought back to win the next three games for the victory.  Winona State had three players record double-digit kills as Rudi Balich and Kim Nemecek led the Warriors with 11 apiece.

The Warriors had only a .166 hitting percentage in the match but were able to capitalize on Southwest's errors as SMSU committed 12 service errors in the match.  SMSU had a .220 hitting percentage and were led by Tricia Ingvalson who had a team-high 17 kills (7E, 36A, .278). 

Three other SMSU players also added double-digit kills.  Leah Ashburn recorded 16 kills and a .387 hitting percentage while Laura Hegerle had 13 kills and tallied nine digs.  Erin Contons had a double-double performance of 11 kills and a team-high 15 digs.

Sara Graf had a good performance having nine kills, 56 set assists and eight digs in the contest.  Sarah Quiram was the only other SMSU player to record double-digit digs as she had 10.

SMSU will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 10 when they host St. Cloud State at 7 p.m. in the PE Gym.
