Borstads Lead SMSU to Tie with Bemidji State

Box Score

MARSHALL, MINN.: The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team tied Bemidji State 1-1 on Sunday in Marshall.  Tatum Borstad scored SMSU's lone goal on a free kick just over two minutes into the match.  The shot came from about 35 yards out and found the top-right corner of the net.  Tatum's sister Kayla Borstad had an excellent day in the net, making 12 saves to preserve the tie for the Mustangs.

BSU tied the match in the 59th minute when Ashlee Ellefsen tapped in a rebound from Jamie Ford.

Both teams had plenty of opportunities to win the match with Bemidji State recording 26 shot attempts and SMSU with 13.  The Mustangs had two shots go wide in the final minute of regulation as Jessica Curl sent one wide left with under 30 seconds left and Heather Anderson sent one wide right as time expired.

In overtime, Curl nearly ended the match 53 seconds into the first overtime period on a free kick, but goalkeeper Samantha Ross came up with the save.  Seconds later on the other end, Kayla Borstad came up with a diving save to her left to stop a shot from Jamie Ford from just inside the top of the box.  Borstad made one more save a minute-and-a-half later on a rebound off a corner kick.  BSU again had chances late in the period as a header by Ford went high and a shot by Kelly Hyvare hit the post.  Borstad made one save in the second overtime period.

For the day, Curl led SMSU with four shot attempts--two on goal.

The Mustangs are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the University of Mary at 11:30 a.m.
