WINONA, MINN.: Winona State erased a 15-point Southwest Minnesota State second half lead and went on to earn a 75-58 Northern Sun Conference victory on Friday night in Winona.
SMSU held a 52-37 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the game but WSU answered with 23-0 run and never looked back in earning the victory. The Warriors outscored the Mustangs 38-6 in the game's final 14 minutes.
The Mustangs who now fall to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the NSIC have struggled in the second half of play. SMSU has held the lead at halftime in 9 of 13 games this season and now have a 5-4 record when leading at the half. The Warriors improve to 11-3 overall and now post a 2-2 conference record.
WSU was led by Grand Valley State transfer Jenny Steffen who scored 19 points with all of them coming in the second half. Winona finished the game shooting 45.3 percent from the field and 57.9 percent from behind the 3-point line.
SMSU's Abby Oakland led the way for the Mustangs as she tied her career high with 16 points while also leading the team with seven rebounds. Megan Wittkop also scored in double digits as she posted 11 points going 3-for-5 from behind the arc.
The Mustangs finished shooting 43.1 percent from the field and were 50 percent from three-point range. Southwest only shot four throws the entire game as they were 2-for-4 compared to WSU's 16-for-21 from the charity stripe. SMSU was also outrebounded by WSU 35 to 30.
SMSU will be back in action tomorrow at 6 p.m. against Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa.
