MARSHALL, MINN. - The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team defeated Minnesota State Moorhead 2-1 on Friday at Mustang Field in Marshall. The win for Southwest was its second of the season, as the Mustangs improve to 2-14-0 overall and 2-10-0 in the NSIC, while MSU Moorhead drops to 7-8-1 overall and 4-7-1 in the NSIC.
Freshmen
Courtney McCarthy and
Kelly Fitzgerald scored SMSU's two goals.
Tatum Borstad and
Liz Judkins each had an assist. In goal,
Kendra Olchefske made five saves to seal her second victory of the season.
SMSU controlled the ball most of the first half and had four shot attempts in the first 10 minutes of the game, but nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. It wasn't until 43:29 when Southwest got on the board, as Judkins' pass from the left side found McCarthy in front of the net for a header goal. It was McCarthy's third goal of the season.
The Mustangs started the second half by peppering MSUM goalkeeper Allison Wanner with six shots in the first 15 minutes, but Dragon forward Kirsten Jacobse stole the ball from an SMSU defender in front of the net and score at 61:31.
SMSU answered back just over six minutes later when Fitzgerald scored her fourth goal of the season, beating Wanner 10 yards out after a beautiful pass from Borstad that led Fitzgerald ahead of two MSUM defenders.
The Dragons kept the Mustangs on their toes in the final 15 minutes, with three shot attempts and a corner kick.
For the game, SMSU outshot MSUM 17-15 and had a 9-1 edge on corner kicks.
The Mustangs will play their final game of the 2008 season at home on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. at the Regional Event Center.
