Big Second Half Lifts SMSU to a Victory Over Northern State

ABERDEEN, S.D.:  The Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs took its first lead of the game with four minutes remaining and held on for an exciting 64-56 victory over Northern State University on Saturday night in Aberdeen, S.D.

The Mustangs gained their first road sweep of the season and improved to 10-11 overall and 6-7 in the NSIC, while NSU falls to 9-13 overall and 5-8 in the conference.  The last time SMSU earned a road sweep was in the 2004-05 season against Minnesota, Crookston and Bemidji State.

SMSU's Sara Leidall hit a jumper with four minutes remaining putting the Mustang up 55-53, SMSU's first lead of the game. Then with 3:14 left to play Abby Oakland hit a huge three-pointer, her fifth of the game, to put SMSU up 58-56. 

Leidall then hit another jumper to gain a 60-56 advantage with 2:57 remaining.  The Mustang's Liz Grider then was able to cap off the win as she hit a jumper with 25 second remaining putting SMSU up 62-56.

The Mustangs trailed 29-26 at halftime while only shooting 30.3 percent from the field.  The victory was SMSU's first when trailing at the half as the Mustangs were 0-5 on the season.

SMSU was lead by Abby Oakland who had 17 points as she was 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-8 from three-point range.  Sara Leidall, who didn't even take a shot in the first half, finished the game with 12 points as she was 5-of-5 from the field and perfect 2-of-2 from behind the arc.

SMSU's freshman Aneshia Starks had a big game hitting some key shots as she finished with six points.  Tori Fink led the team with five assists while adding eight points.  Laura Kramer led the team with six rebounds. 

Southwest finished the game shooting 43.6 percent from the field and 52.4 percent from three-point range.  The Mustangs connected on 11 three-pointers in the game.  NSU finished shooting 40.7 percent from the field while outrebounding SMSU 38-32 in the contest.

Northern State was led by Ryanne Brockhaus who had 13 points while Noelle Hall added 12.

SMSU will be back in action on Feb. 8 at home hosting Upper Iowa at 6 p.m.
