SMSU Snaps Two-Match Skid, Tops Hamline

ST. PAUL, MINN.: The Southwest Minnesota State women's tennis team defeated Hamline 7-2 on Sunday afternoon in St. Paul.  The win snaps a two-match losing streak for SMSU and improves its record to 2-4 this spring.  Hamline is now 1-4 this season.

The Mustangs won two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches on the day.  After an 8-5 loss at No. 1 doubles, SMSU rebounded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles as Danielle Hildebrandt and Cailey Grupe won 8-2 at No. 2 and Diana Naatz and Trisha Baldwin won 8-2 at No. 3.

After a rough start, Ananda Ferrari picked up a win at No. 1 singles in three sets, 0-6, 6-4, 10-5 over Kelly Gust.  After a 6-1, 6-1 loss at No. 2 singles by Ramona Lerch, Hildebrandt, Naatz, Grupe and Baldwin all won in straight sets at Nos. 3-6 singles, respectively.

SMSU opens the NSIC season on Sunday, Mar. 2 at Bemidji State with an 8 a.m. match scheduled with the Beavers.  The Mustangs will then face Minnesota-Morris in a non-conference match at noon, also in Bemidji.
