Rolling Mustangs Go 2-2 in Missouri

COLUMBIA, MO.: SMSU opened the weekend with a 71-49 loss to the University of Texas-Arlington.  The Mustangs rebounded later that day, with a 60-42 victory over the host University of Missouri.  Saturday opened with the Mustangs losing to the University of Arizona with a final score of 62-46.  SMSU wrapped up the weekend with a 77-62 victory over the University of Alabama.  This brings the Mustangs record to 8-8 overall.

Game one recap
    SMSU opened the weekend against the University of Texas-Arlington. Texas' combination of speed and strong interior play caused problems for SMSU. The Mustangs shot 46.2 percent from the field in the first half and was down by a score of 34-24 at half. In the second half the Mustangs allowed their opponent to shoot 55.6 percent from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. In the end the final score read 71-49. The Mustangs were led in the loss by Evan Thorn with 14 points, four rebounds, and six assists; Nathan Peitz also added 13 points, and three assists.

Game two recap
    The second game of the weekend pitted the Mustangs against the, host team, University of Missouri. The Mustangs dominated the younger Missouri team with a final score of 60-42. The Mustangs shot 61.3 percent from the field in the first half and never looked back. The Mustangs were led by Nathaniel Carruth with 19 points and five rebounds. Evan Thorn accumulated a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and Nathan Pietz chipped in with 14 points of his own.

Game three recap
    Saturday morning began with a disappointing loss to the University of Arizona. Turnovers and poor shooting plagued the Mustangs, who were only able to score a meager 25 first-half points to their opponents 37. Despite outrebounding its opponent 27 to 18 in the second half, SMSU shot a dismal 21.2% from the field and in the end lost the contest 62-46. The Mustangs were led in the defeat by Nathaniel Carruth with 14 points and five rebounds, Evan Thorn also had 11 points and Nathan Pietz added 9 points and nine rebounds.

Game four recap
    Mustangs were able to finish on a positive note for the weekend defeating the University of Alabama 77-62. The Mustangs shook off their shooting problem connecting on 50 percent of their shots in the game. The Mustangs also finished with only eight turnovers in the contest. Evan Thorn had a tremendous game with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Christian Ekunwe had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Nathaniel Carruth added 16 points of his own.

    The Mustangs will be in action again February 15th and 16th as they travel to the University of Illinois for four games.
