ST. PAUL, MINN.: Southwest Minnesota State University cornerback
Lionel Lamarre has been named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. The announcement came Tuesday morning from the conference office in St. Paul.
Lamarre (la-mar), a 5-9, 172-pound junior from Dolton, Ill., played a big role in two key special teams plays during the Mustangs' 54-14 victory over Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday. The Harper College (Ill.) transfer, playing his first game in a Mustang uniform, recovered a fumble on a UMC kickoff return and also scooped up a blocked punt, one of two blocked by SMSU on the day, and ran it back 20 yards for a touchdown. He also had two tackles, including one for loss and a pass break-up in the victory.
Southwest Minnesota State, 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC, will host Black Hills State University (S.D.) in a non-conference game on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 4 p.m. The game will be the official Grand Opening for the new Regional Event Center as well as the second annual Ag Bowl.
