Mustangs Down Mary, Grab First Conference Win Since 2006-07

BISMARCK, N.D.
- After trailing 16-15,the Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team took the final two bouts of the day to capture a 24-16 conference victory over Mary Saturday afternoon in Bismarck, N.D.  It was SMSU's conference dual win since the 2006-07 season and head coach Jesse Nelson's first conference win at SMSU.

The Mustangs improve to 2-1 (1-0 NSIC) on the season, while the Marauders drop to 0-2 (0-2 NSIC).

SMSU's Michal Barrie started the day by pinning Mary's Landon DellaSilva at 141 pounds.  Barrie was already leading the match 9-2 when he pinned DellaSilva at 2:11.

Garret Rozeboom won the next bout at 149 pounds by forfeit, giving the Mustangs a 12-0 lead.

Mary would rattle off wins in the three ensuing bouts, as Taylor Nagel took a 8-0 major decision from Luke Giese at 157 pounds, Jordan Henderson took a 7-3 decision from Nick Wulf at 165 pounds and Lance Piatz took a 5-3 decision from Nathan Krekelberg at 174 pounds.  The Mustangs, however, still led at 12-10.

Tyler Johnson extended that lead to 15-10 after posting a 4-3 win over Kurt Wiedrich at 184 pounds.

Mary's Dusty Vliem then pinned SMSU's Tyler Reed in 2:15 to give the host Marauders a one-point advantage at 16-15.

But it was freshman heavyweight Carter Ash who came up big in the next match, pinning Kevin McClearly in 2:59 to give the Mustangs a five-point lead at 21-16.

After both teams left 125 pounds open, Jordan Rozeboom took an 8-6 decision from Dan Sabin at 133 pound to seal the deal and give the Mustangs the 24-16 victory.

SMSU will be back in action on Friday when it hosts Augstana in a 7 p.m. conference dual.
