MARSHALL, MINN. - No. 18 Augustana used a pair of pins and three major decisions to hand the Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team a 32-7 loss in the Mustangs' home opener Friday night in Marshall.
Augie improves to 6-2 (2-0 NSIC), while SMSU drops to 2-2 (1-1 NSIC).
Tyler Johnson started the meet by taking a 7-4 decision from Nick Henning at 184 pounds, giving the host Mustangs a 3-0 advantage.
The nationally ranked Vikings, however, would win the next seven bouts as Tyler Copsey pinned
Ben Derynck at 197 pounds, Lance Peters took a 3-2 decision from
Carter Ash at heavyweight, Al Meger took a 12-4 major decision from
Ed Reno at 125 pounds, Sidney Bice defeated
Michal Barrie 3-2 at 133 pounds, Jay Sherer handed
Brandan Schunk a 4-1 loss at 141 pounds and Mike Long bettered
Tanner Skillings 9-4 at 149 pounds. The Mustangs trailed 22-3
David Albrecht, making his debut in a Mustang singlet, won the next bout at 157 pounds. The redshirt freshman took a 16-8 major decision from Carl Serck. Albrecht had four take downs in the victory to make it 22-7.
At 165 pounds, SMSU's
Wade Granger lost a 17-5 major decision to Gavin Nelson. In the final bout at 174 pounds, Augie's Marcus Edgington pinned
Nathan Krekelberg in 2:59.
The Mustangs are back in action on Jan. 22 when they host Division III Concordia-Moorhead at 7 p.m.
