MARSHALL, Minn. -
Kelly Fitzgerald scored two goals in the first half to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 2-0 conference victory over Wayne State Sunday afternoon at the Regional Event Center in Marshall, Minn. The win broke an 11-game losing streak for the Mustangs and also marked the first time since last season SMSU has scored multiple goals in a game.
SMSU improves to 1-11-0 (1-8-0 NSIC), while WSC drops to 3-12-1 (0-8-1 NSIC).
It didn't take Fitzgerald long to score her first goal of the season. The sophomore found the back of the net just over two minutes into the contest, knocking one in from the right side to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage.
Heather Anderson and
Courtney McCarthy were credited with the assists.
But Fitzgerald wasn't done; 24 minutes later, she took a pass from
Maggy Rouse and sent a high shot from the right side over WSC goalkeeper Emily Walker to give SMSU a decisive 2-0 lead.
SMSU had a season-high 19 shots--12 of them on goal.
Kate Voigt and Rouse led the Mustangs with four shots on goal. Voigt had three of those shots on goal.

Kendra Olchefske recorded her first shutout of 2009 and made four saves in the win.
Walker had 10 saves for the Wildcats.
SMSU is back home next weekend, hosting Upper Iowa and Winona State.
