Setting the Stage: Following a three-game home stand the Southwest Minnesota State University football team begins a two-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road trip this Saturday, Sept. 26 at No. 22 Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at WSC's Cunningham Field.
Saturday's game will feature two of the top offensive teams in the country. WSC is seventh in total offense (473.7) and 32nd in scoring (34.2), while SMSU is 10th in total offense (464.5) and fourth in scoring offense (45.5). The two teams starting quarterbacks also enter the game with impressive statistics. SMSU junior
Ryan Ratekin is first in the nation in passing efficiency (204.1) and is tied for 13th in total offense (294.0), while WSC senior Silas Fluellan is seventh in total offense (323.2).
SMSU, 3-1 overall, 2-1 NSIC, 1-0 NSIC South, is coming off a 52-24 home victory over Upper Iowa and will be looking to snap a four-game losing streak to Wayne State. It will also be SMSU's second game versus a nationally ranked team this season. The Mustangs fell 34-27 to No. 9 Minnesota Duluth in week three.
WSC, 3-1 overall, 2-1 NSIC, 0-1 NSIC South, is coming off a heartbreaking 37-34 double overtime road loss to No. 7 Minnesota State, Mankato on Saturday night.
