MANKATO, Minn. - No. 5 Southwest Minnesota State picked up a five-set win over No. 16 Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn. this afternoon behind the arm of
Devin Diedrich who led all players with 24 kills. The Mustangs won by scores of 25-21, 25-18, 20-25, 23-25 and 15-9. SMSU improves to 21-3 overall and 13-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
Diedrich's 24 kills helped the Mustangs overcome the Maverick comeback. To go along with her offensive attack Diedrich added two solo and four block assists. The Mustangs picked up 10 team blocks against the Mavericks.
Brooke Burmeister picked up 14 kills of her own on the match to go along with seven digs.
Mary Groth notched 12 kills for SMSU to go with her three block assists.
Cara Carson picked up 53 assits, three kills, five digs and two block assits in the match.
Kenzie Niesche led the Mustangs with 24 digs.
Southwest Minnesota State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead taking the first set 25-21 and the second set 25-18. Minnesota State came out of the break and won the next two sets to force a fifth set. The Mustangs jumped out early and took a 7-3 lead and wouldn't let the lead go. SMSU dominated the final set and picking up a 15-9 win and the match 3-2.
The Mustangs will pick up NSIC play on Tuesday, Nov. 2 when they travel to Moorhead, Minn. to take on the Dragons of MSU Moorhead at 7 p.m.
