No. 3 SMSU Makes Quick Work of Augustana in 3-0 Win

Abby Meyers had a career-high 13 kills in No. 3 Southwest Minnesota State's 3-0 sweep over Augustana College. The Mustangs won by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-12. SMSU improves to 15-2, 7-1 NSIC while Augustana drops to 9-8, 5-3, NSIC.

Meyers surpassed her previous career-high by two kills. The freshman picked up 13 kills against the Vikings tonight. She also set a new-career high with a .722 hitting percentage in the win over Augustana.

Sophomore Mary Groth led all players with 14 kills. She had a .464 hitting percentage in the match. Groth provided powerful kills for SMSU keeping the Augustana defense on its toes.

Augustana matched SMSU point for point early in the first set and eventually taking a three-point lead over the Mustangs. SMSU went on a five-point run to take a 12-10 lead over Augustana behind the serve of freshman Rachel Westby. Westby finished the match with two kills, one assist and two service aces. She also led the Mustang defense with 10 digs.

Westby started out with the ball in the second set and led the Mustangs to a 5-0 lead early in the second set. The two teams traded points until Augustana finally tied the score in the second set 11-11 on a kill by Taylor Hrdlichka.

Groth picked up three consecutive kills for the Mustangs in the second set to push SMSU ahead by a 21-17 score. The Mustangs went on to win the set on a kill by Cara Carson. The junior setter finished the match with 41 assists and three kills.

Augie came out to an early lead in the third and final set. The Vikings led up until SMSU was able to tie the set at 7-7. The Mustangs grabbed the lead and never looked back from there winning the third set 25-12. The Mustangs went on two six-point runs with Brooke Burmeister picking up three kills in the process. The sophomore finished the match with 12 kills and a .458 hitting percentage.

Southwest Minnesota State will end its five-match home stand tomorrow night when they welcome No. 1 Wayne State at 3 p.m. at the PE Gym. The Wildcats handed SMSU its first loss of the season in the championship game of the Colorado Premier Challenge. The Mustangs will look to avenge the loss and take down the top-ranked team in the country.
