Upper Iowa scores three goals in six-minute span to down Mustangs

Peacocks score three late goals downing SMSU 3-1 on Saturday

MARSHALL, Minn. –
Upper Iowa University scored three goals in the second half, all within a six-minute span, defeating Southwest Minnesota State 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in Marshall. SMSU falls to 5-8-1 overall on the season, including 4-5-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play while Upper Iowa moves to 6-7-2 overall, 4-4-2 NSIC.

Kelly Fitzgerald tied her career season-high scoring her fifth goal of the season to give SMSU an early 1-0 lead. Whitney Borstad was credited with the assist sending a corner kick towards the box finding Fitzgerald who put the ball home on a header.

Fitzgerald is now tied for ninth all-time at SMSU with 16 career goals.

Southwest Minnesota State held on to the lead through the first half. Upper Iowa was able to tie the match at one apiece when Verlia Ptasinski drilled a shot past SMSU's freshman keeper Sonya Smith in the 75th minute. Smith falls to 5-7-1 on the season, facing 23 total shots in the match.

The Peacocks added to the lead in the 78th minute when Kelsey Taldone set a free kick off an SMSU player and into the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead. Two minutes later, Liz Kaluzinski cushioned UIU's lead to 3-1 tallying her seventh goal of the season.

Southwest Minnesota State will play its final regular season home match tomorrow afternoon hosting Winona State at 1 p.m. for SMSU's senior day.
