Mustangs blanked by Minnesota Duluth on Saturday

DULUTH, Minn. –
Minnesota Duluth held Southwest Minnesota State to just two shots on goal, earning a 2-0 victory over the Mustangs in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer on Saturday afternoon in Duluth, Minn. SMSU falls to 5-10-1 overall, 4-7-1 in NSIC play while the Bulldogs improve to 9-5-1, 9-3-0 NSIC.

The Bulldogs took 27 shots in the match, scoring a goal in each half to down the Mustangs. SMSU freshman goalkeeper Sonya Smith finished the match with 12 saves.

UMD got on the board in the 39th minute when Maureen Stormont tipped in a shot past Smith. The Bulldogs added to their lead in the 57th minute after a rebound goal by Kristi Mehrman.

Southwest Minnesota State will conclude regular season play tomorrow afternoon taking on Bemidji State at 1 p.m. in Bemidji, Minn.
