Vikings score early; earn 1-0 victory over Mustangs

MARSHALL, Minn. -
Augustana (S.D.) took 25 shot, landing 11 on goal, on its way to a 1-0 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer action on Saturday afternoon in Marshall. SMSU falls to 4-6 on the season, including 3-3 in the NSIC while Augustana improves to 6-5, 3-3 NSIC.

Augustana's Haley Berner scored off a scramble in front of SMSU's net in the 22nd minute. That would be all the Vikings would need as SMSU's freshman goalkeeper Sonya Smith was busy in the net.

Smith finished the match making 10 saves, while the Vikings kept firing shots toward the goal. Augie attempted 25 shots in the match.

It was a hard-fought match today in Marshall, with 21 fouls and three yellow cards being distributed.

SMSU fired 10 shots in the match, landing three on goal. Augustana's Amanda Wagner earned the victory in goal, improving to 6-5 on the season. SMSU's Smith falls to 4-5 on the season.

Southwest Minnesota State will continue NSIC play tomorrow afternoon hosting Wayne State (Neb.). Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at the Regional Event Center in Marshall.
