MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State scored two goals in the second half to overcome a 1-0 deficit to defeat Wayne State (Neb.) 2-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Sunday in Marshall.
Kelly Fitzgerald scored the game winning goal for SMSU in the 71st minute to lift the Mustangs to victory.
SMSU improves to 5-6 overall, including 4-3 in the NSIC while Wayne State falls to 3-7-2 overall, 0-6-1 NSIC.
Wayne State took an early 1-0 lead when Alex Mathers put the Wildcats on the board in the 30th minute.

Sonya Smith busy this afternoon. Smith faced 18 shots, making 12 saves and allowing just the one goal. Smith evens her season record to 5-5 in goal on the season. WSC's Ryan Wells was tagged with the loss, falling to 0-4.
Sophomore
Whitney Borstad was able to tie the match at 1, scoring an unassisted goal in the 55th minute. Borstad's goal was the first of her career at SMSU.

The Mustangs were able to hang on for the win, improving to 4-3 in conference play, its most conference wins since going 4-7-3 during the 2005 season.
Southwest Minnesota State will hit the road next weekend taking on Minnesota, Crookston at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15. SMSU will then travel to MSU Moorhead on Sunday to square-off with the Dragons at 1 p.m.
