SETTING THE SCENE: Southwest Minnesota State University (3-6, 3-5 NSIC, 1-3 NSIC South) concludes its 2011 home season on Saturday, Nov. 5, taking on conference co-leader Minnesota State University (7-2, 7-1 NSIC, 5-0 NSIC South) in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division match-up with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. at Mattke Field at the Regional Event Center.
Minnesota State begins the week ranked No. 9 in this week's NCAA Super Region Three rankings released on Monday. The top six teams will advance to the NCAA playoffs starting on Nov. 19.
Saturday's game also marks the final home appearance for 10 Mustang seniors, who will be honored prior to kickoff with their family members. SMSU will be looking for its first-ever victory over Minnesota State in 10 games and will also be looking to rebound from last Saturday's 47-20 road loss to Winona State.
The SMSU punt team begins the week ranked No.1 in the country in net punting (40.0). Sophomore punter
Mike Wenk has a 45.1-yard punt average, which would rank No.2 in the country, but he does not meet the minimum punts per game to qualify. The minimum is 3.6 per game and Wenk has punted an average of 3.3 per game.
SMSU quarterback
Tyler Peschong ranks 30th in the country in total offense (267.0), while running back Warren Matthews ranks 31st in all-purpose yardage (143.3).
Minnesota State (preview on page 4) is on a three-game winning streak and last played on Thursday, Oct. 27, earning a 27-26 home win over Augustana.
