MANKATO, Minn. – No. 8 Minnesota State, Mankato captured eight of ten bouts to earn a 31-6 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday night in Mankato, Minn.
MSU improves to 9-4 overall, 5-1 NSIC, while SMSU drops to 5-4-1 overall, 1-4 NSIC.
SMSU fell behind 6-0 following the opening bout, as MSU's Andy Forstner, ranked No. 4 in the country, defeated SMSU's
Travis Borchert by fall at 34 seconds.
Justin Reinsma answered back for SMSU earning an 8-3 decision at 133 lbs., to trim the MSU lead to 6-3. Reinsma is now 22-10 on the season.
The Mavericks would then win three straight close matches to extend its lead to 15-3, before earning back-to-back major decisions to push the margin to 23-3.
At 184, MSU's Aaron Norgren, ranked No. 6, slipped past
CD Johnson with a 6-4 decision in overtime, before a tech fall by MSU at 197, gave MSU a 31-3 lead.
SMSU's
Brian Rodas capped the match with a 9-5 victory over Nate Haynes, to improve to 6-1 on the season.
SMSU will close out its home season tomorrow night taking on NCAA III Buena Vista University starting at 7 p.m. in the PE Gym.
