MARSHALL, Minn. – No. 2 Augustana College took eight out of 10 bouts to defeat Southwest Minnesota State 27-6 in an NSIC dual tonight in Marshall. The Vikings improve to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in NSIC action while SMSU falls to 4-3-1 overall and 0-3 in conference duals.
The Vikings took seven straight bouts before
CD Johnson put SMSU on the board with a 6-4 decision over Tom Davies. SMSU's only other points came from
Brian Rodas who defeated Lance Peters in the 285-pound match.
Augustana jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with a win in the 125-pound bout. Augustana's Al Merger defeated
Travis Borchert in a 13-1 major decision. The Vikings would extend the lead to 7-0 when Jason Jeremiason (133 pounds) needed overtime to bring down SMSU's
Justin Reinsma in 3-1 decision.
Jay Sherer who is ranked No. 4 in the nation at 141 pounds defeated SMSU's
Ethan Hildebrandt in a 6-1 decision, stretching the Vikings' lead to 10-0 over SMSU. The Mustangs fell short of another victory in the 149-pound match when Augustana's Nate Herda who is ranked No. 6 in the nation needed overtime to defeat
Demond Carter in a 3-1 decision.
The Vikings would continue to grow their lead in the 157 and 165 pound matches. No. 3 Marcus Edgington earned an 8-4 decision over
Casey Field before No. 4 Gavin Nelson gave the Vikings four more points with a 20-7 major decision over Billy Fate giving the Vikings a 20-0 lead.
Freshman Zach Coates took No. 7 Carl Serck down to the wire in the 174-pound bout. Serck got a late takedown to take an 8-6 lead with 30 seconds remaining in the bout. Serck would gain an extra point on riding time to take a 9-6 decision over Coates.
The Mustangs would get on the board when
CD Johnson (184 pounds) defeated Tom Davies in a 6-4 decision. The Vikings would take a 23-3 lead into the 197-pound match. No. 2 Ty Copsey earned a 14-5 major decision over SMSU's
Ethan Hildebrandt giving the Vikings a 27-3 lead.
Brian Rodas would gain SMSU's only other points in the dual when he defeated Augustana's Lance Peters in a 3-1 decision earning a late takedown to seal the victory.
Southwest Minnesota State will continue NSIC action tomorrow afternoon hosting No. 20 MSU Moorhead in dual that is set to begin at 3 p.m.
