MARSHALL, Minn. – Kelly Fitzgerald dove into the goal crease and scored on a header in the 18th minute helping Southwest Minnesota State a 2-0 victory over St. Catherine University in exhibition play on Wednesday night in Marshall.
Kate Chandler and
Vanesa Corona assisted on the Fitzgerald goal. Chandler threw in the ball from the sideline and Corona found a streaking Fitzgerald who dove into the goal crease and pounded a header into the back of the net to give SMSU an early lead.
Autumn Hayes added to SMSU's lead in the 44th minute of the second half scoring on a long shot opportunity from the right post.
SMSU's
Kendra Olchefske earned the win in the goal making four saves in the match. St. Kate's goalkeeper Abbey Hinton earned the loss while making three saves in the match. The Mustangs outshot the Wildcats 12-9 in the match.
Southwest Minnesota State will begin regular season play on Saturday, Sept. 3 taking on Montana State-Billings at 5 p.m. CT in Billings, Mont. SMSU will then play Colorado Christian at 5 p.m. on Sunday in Billings.
