MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State opened Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Saturday with a 1-0 road victory over St. Cloud State. 
The conference victory is SMSU's first since Oct. 31, 2009, and snaps a 14-game conference winless streak. 
Kelly Fitzgerald scored the game-winning goal in the 26th minute on an assist from 
Kendra Olchefske.
Sonya Smith was outstanding in goal once again for the Mustangs, recording her second career shutout with eight saves. 
It was the second meeting between the two schools in one week. SCSU rallied to earn a 2-1 non-conference last Saturday in Marshall.
SMSU, 2-2 overall, 1-0 (3 pts.) NSIC, will continue conference play on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at Concordia, St. Paul.
