MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State won six out of 10 matches on its way to a 23-17 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference  dual victory over Northern State on Friday night in Marshall. The Mustangs improve to 7-3 overall on the season, including 1-1 in the NSIC while Northern State falls to 2-4, 0-3 NSIC.

Travis Borchert gave the Mustangs a 6-0 lead in the first bout of the night, pinning Anthony Bruno at 4:31 in the 125-pound class. The victory marked Borchert's fifth win by fall in the season. Justin Reinsma (133 pounds) extended SMSU's lead to 9-0 earning a 6-2 decision over Ian Muirhead.

Southwest Minnesota State pushed its lead to 12-0 in the 141-pound bout, with Ethan Hildebrandt earning a 12-5 decision over Terrence Fox. Codie Lane (149 pounds) earned an 8-2 decision over Gavin Larsen to give the Mustangs a 15-0 lead.

Northern State got on the board when Neil Sell pinned Josh Anderson (157 pounds) at 1:12, cutting the Mustangs' lead to 15-6. Jacob Begin (165 pounds) improved to 16-4, picking up a 12-1 major decision over Blake Lundgren giving the Mustangs a 19-6 lead. Begin has now won seven straight matches.   

The Wolves cut SMSU's lead to nine at 19-10, when Donnie Bowden earned a 15-5 major decision over Trent Molacek (174 pounds). Northern State continued its comeback with Chad Gibson earning a 3-2 decision over Andrew Rodas in the 184-pound bout.

Martin Hagen (197 pounds) pushed SMSU's lead to 10 at 23-13 earning an 11-3 major decision over Baker Haar. Matt Meuleners, the second-ranked heavyweight in the country, earned a 14-4 major decision over Cole Wilson to make the score 23-17.

Southwest Minnesota State returns to NSIC action tomorrow night taking on the No. 1-ranked team in the country in St. Cloud State University beginning at 7 p.m. at Canby High School in Canby, Minn.
