No. 2 Mustangs throttle Bemidji State in three sets on Friday night

BOX SCORE

MARSHALL, Minn. -
The Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team started the weekend off with a 3-0 sweep of Bemidji State on Friday night. The No. 2 Mustangs earned the victory with set wins of 25-12, 25-11 and 25-16. SMSU improves to 17-1 overall, 9-1 in NSIC play, while the Beavers drop to 3-14 overall, 1-9 in NSIC play.

The Mustangs have now won 18 straight matches over Bemidji State dating back to 2003.

The Beavers were no match for the No. 2 Mustangs as SMSU combined for a .302 attack percentage. SMSU would coast to victories in each set as BSU only managed two early leads in sets two and three. The Mustangs recorded nine aces to tie their season-high.

In the first set, Senior middle blocker, Devin Diedrich recorded her 1,500th kill in a Mustang uniform. The Braham native is closing the gap between herself and Paige Karno for second place on SMSU's all-time kill list.

Brooke Burmeister fronted the Mustang attack with 11 kills as she was the only player to record double-digit kills in the match. Diedrich followed with nine kills, while Mary Groth and McKell Anderson had six kills respectively. Emilee Gutzmer dished out 26 assists, while Rachel Westby had 15 digs.

SMSU will continue action tomorrow night at the UMC SportsCenter in Crookston, Minn. as the Mustangs will take on Minnesota, Crookston.
