MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team snapped a three-game winless streak with a 2-1 win over Northern State in double-overtime on Saturday afternoon. Freshman forward,
Miranda Cadena scored in the 106th minute to propel the Mustangs to a 2-1 victory. With the overtime victory, SMSU picks up three points in the conference and improves to 6-5-1 overall, 4-5-1 in NSIC play, while Northern State falls to 3-9-1 overall, 2-7-1 in NSIC play.
Northern State would jump out to a quick 1-0 lead as Rachel Goslinga scored in the 16th minute. SMSU goalkeeper deflected a Wolves shot which rebounded right to Goslinga who put it away for her 8th goal of the season. The Wolves would hold the 1-0 lead into the half but SMSU would answer in the 52nd minute with a
Brittney Bravo goal, assisted by
Kendahl Fisher.
Sonya Smith would come up big in the 55th minute with a huge save on a penalty kick from Rachel Goslinga. The ball was directed to the left side of the goal but the sophomore goalkeeper was able to corral the shot to keep the score tied. SMSU would put the game away in the second overtime as
Miranda Cadena scored on a shot in front of the net. The ball was put into play from a throw-in from
Kendahl Fisher and
Brittney Bravo came away with it and found Cadena in front of the net and beat Shaina Stein for the game-winning goal.
SMSU outshot NSU 15-10 in the contest.
Brittney Bravo led SMSU with seven shots with five coming on goal.
Sonya Smith improved to 6-5-1 on the season as she allowed one goal while making six saves in 110 minutes. The game was the second straight double-overtime game for the Mustangs.
SMSU will return to action at the Regional Event Center tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. as the Mustangs will host Minnesota State Moorhead.
