Mustangs score three goals in three minutes to defeat MSU Moorhead 3-0

BOX SCORE

MARSHALL, Minn. -
The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team scored three goals in three minutes to down Minnesota State Moorhead 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. With the win, SMSU improves to 7-5-1 overall, 5-5-1 in NSIC play, while MSUM drops to 4-9-1 overall, 3-7-1 in NSIC play.

The start of the game was an exciting one as both teams had scoring opportunities within the first three minutes. SMSU's Miranda Cadena would get the Mustangs' only first half shot off in the second minute but Carole Braschayko made a nice save. The Dragons would quickly come down the field in the third minute as Holly Gillund had a breakaway but Sonya Smith made a brilliant save to keep the Dragons off the board.

The wind played a huge factor in the game as SMSU went into the wind in the first half and only managed one shot. When MSUM went into the wind in the second half, the Dragons only managed two shots.

The Mustangs were outplayed until the 67th minute as SMSU would score three goals in the next three minutes. Miranda Cadena would put the first goal of the game on the board as she scored her fifth goal of the season in the 67th minute, assisted from Kendahl Fisher. Less than two minutes later, the dou would strike again for SMSU's second goal of the game as Cadena beat Braschayko again for her sixth goal of the season with the assist coming from Fisher.

Just 28 seconds later, SMSU would score yet again as Danica Requejo booted a ball from 40 yards out that was blown by the strong wind and trickled past the Dragon defense. It was Requejo's first goal of the season and first of her career as the goal came unassisted in the 69th minute.

Sonya Smith made five saves en route to her fifth shutout of the season. The shutout was the sixth of the season for SMSU's goalkeepers.

SMSU will remain home next weekend as the Mustangs will host Minnesota State, Mankato on Saturday Oct. 20 at 12 p.m. and Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday Oct. 21 at 1 p.m.
