SMSU football hosts Upper Iowa this Saturday

SMSU RETURNS HOME SEEKING TO KEEP WINNING STREAK OVER UPPER IOWA
The Southwest Minnesota State University (2-5 NSIC, 1-1 NSIC South) football team returns to the  friendly confines of the Regional Event Center this Saturday, Oct. 13, to face Upper Iowa University (2-5 NSIC, 0-3 NSIC South).  Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Mattke Field. 

SMSU, coming off a heartbreaking 34-31 double overtime loss to No. 10 Minnesota State last Saturday, will be looking for its fifth straight win over Upper Iowa.  UIU's last victory in the series was on Oct. 13, 2007.

Upper Iowa has lost three straight games, including a 66-20 setback at home to Augustana last Saturday.  SMSU begins the week ranked third in the NSIC in rushing offense and fifth in total offense, while ranking sixth in pass defense.  UIU brings the third ranked total offense in the NSIC, including the third ranked pass offense. 

LAST WEEK
Southwest Minnesota State lost a 34-31 double overtime decision to No. 10 Minnesota State in Mankato last Saturday.  SMSU held a 24-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but MSU rallied with a pair of touchdowns, including the game-tying score with 39 seconds left in regulation.  Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime, but SMSU was stopped on downs on its possession in double overtime.  MSU then won the game with a 20-yard field goal on its second possession.  SMSU ended the game with 383 yards of offense against the  top-ranked defense in the country, including 176 on the ground.  Warren Matthews rushed for a game-high 81 yards on 18 carries, while Anthony Dean caught three passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

Upper Iowa fell behind 28-0 in the first quarter and could never recover in losing 66-20 to Augustana.  Augustana finished the game with 650 yards on offense, including 315 on the ground.  Caden Duncan led the Peacocks with 111 yards rushing on 14 carries.
