Mustangs drop final game of season 2-0 to Wayne State on Sunday afternoon

WAYNE, Neb. - The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team dropped its final game of the season 2-0 to the Wayne State Wildcats on Sunday afternoon. With the loss SMSU finishes the season 7-9-1 overall, 5-8-1 in NSIC, while Wayne State finishes 3-14-2, 3-11-1 in the NSIC.

The Mustangs had a chance to finish a season .500 for only the second time in program history, but couldn't manage a victory in their last four games. The Mustangs dropped below .500 for the first time all season with the loss to Augustana on Friday and Sunday's loss extended SMSU's losing streak to four, its longest of the season.

The Wildcats got on the board early as Kayli Hopper scored for WSC in the 12th minute. Another WSC goal would come in the 54th minute via Kelly Voigt's header that was put in play off a corner kick.

Sonya Smith allowed two goals and made only one save in the contest. Smith finishes the season with a 7-8-1 record.

The Mustangs outshot the Wilcats 13-7 but couldnt manage a goal. It was the second consecutive game the Mustang offense had failed to score a goal.

The Mustangs finish 11th in the NSIC Standings. SMSU's seven wins this season marks the most wins since 2004.
