MUSTANGS CLOSE OUT 2012 SEASON WITH A PAIR OF HOME GAMES
The Southwest Minnesota State University (3-6NSIC, 2-3 NSIC South) football team returns home to face Concordia University-St. Paul (2-7 NSIC, 1-4 NSIC South) on Saturday, Nov. 3, with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. at Mattke Field at the Regional Event Center.
Saturday's game is the first of two SMSU will have at home to close the 2012 season. Following this week's game, the Mustangs will host Augustana College on Nov. 10.
SMSU and CU enter as two of the top offensive units in the NSIC. SMSU is ranked fifth total offense, including fifth in rushing offense, while CU is seventh in total offense, including seventh in passing offense.
TOUGH SCHEDULE FOR SMSU
The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference has proven in recent years to be a one of the top conferences in the country. The second NCAA Super Three region rankings released on Monday proves just how strong. Four of the top nine teams in the rankings are from the NSIC, with Minnesota State ranked No. 2, Minnesota Duluth No. 7, Winona State No. 8 and Sioux Falls No. 9. Four of SMSU's six losses have come against those top nine?teams in the region.
LAST WEEK
Southwest Minneota State was held to a season-low 245 yards of offense and dropped a 47-20 road decision to Winona State. SMSU was held to a season-low 80 yards rushing and was held to under 100 yards rushing for just the second time this season. SMSU trailed just 14-7 at halftime, but WSU opened the second half with 16 straight points and never looked back.
Tyler Peschong completed 14 of 22 passes for 121 yards, before leaving in the fourth quarter with an injury.
Charlie Kern came on relief and passed for 47 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for one touchdown.
Cody Condon caught a team-high six passes for 61 yards.
Concordia lost its third straight game, falling to Augustana at home 35-27. The Golden Bears trailed 28-10 after three quarters, before scoring a pair of late fourth quarter touchdowns to cut the deficit to eight points, but Augustana recovered an on-side kick and ran out the clock. Kicker Tom Obarski drilled a school-record 59-yard field goal in the game for the Golden Bears.
