SMSU soccer ties Upper Iowa 0-0

FAYETTE, Iowa –
The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team gained a point in the NSIC standings with a 0-0 tie with Upper Iowa on Sunday afternoon. With the tie, SMSU moves to 5-5-1 overall, 3-5-1 in NSIC play, while Upper Iowa moves to 9-2-1 overall, 6-2-1 in NSIC play.

Coming off a 10-0 victory over Sioux Falls, Upper Iowa's offense was halted by Sonya Smith and the Mustang defense as they didn't surrender a single goal in the entire game. Sonya Smith would record nine saves to hold the Peacock offense scoreless for 110 minutes as the game went into double-overtime. The shutout marks the fourth shutout of the season for Sonya Smith, fifth shutout for the Mustangs' goalkeepers and only the second time the Peacocks have been shutout this season.

In the first half, the Mustangs were held without a shot, while the Peacocks got off 10 total shots. The Mustangs were outshot 7-24 in the contest but neither team managed to find the back of the net and resulted in a 0-0 stalemate.

SMSU will welcome the next five opponents to the Regional Event Center in Marshall, Minn. Northern State will come to town on Saturday, Oct. 13 for a 1 p.m. game against the Mustangs.
