MARSHALL, Minn. - No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul earned a share of the 2012 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season title with a sweep of No. 1 Southwest Minnesota State. CU earned the match with set victories of 25-18, 25-21, and 25-19. With the loss, SMSU's 19 consecutive match-winning streak is halted and the Mustangs drop to 26-2 overall, 18-2 in the NSIC. With the victory, CU improves to 24-3 overall, 18-2 in the NSIC. The win also game Minnesota Duluth a share of the 2012 NSIC Title, as SMSU, CU and UMD were all crowned co-champions on the final night of the regular season.
SMSU earned a share of the NSIC title last night with the match-win over No. 22 Minnesota State, Mankato, its first since the 2001 season.
Concordia powered its way to victory as the Golden Bears boasted a .381 hitting percentage as a unit. The Mustangs would only manage four leads in the entire set. Kayla Koenecke and Ashley Murtha led the way as the two both recorded a match-high 13 kills, respectively. Setter, Amanda Konetchy had 46 assists in the contest. Taylor Dordan was fantastic as the libero dug out Mustang attacks time after time, she ended with 18 digs.
Mary Groth led the way for the Mustangs, as the senior middle blocker posted 12 kills on 21 attacks for an impressive .476 hitting percentage.
Brooke Burmeister and
Devin Diedrich both added eight kills each,
Abbey Thissen had seven and
McKell Anderson rounded out the scoring with just four kills on 22 attacks.
The Golden Bears avoided
Rachel Westby all match long as Westby only had six digs.
Emilee Gutzmer recorded her ninth double-double of the season (ninth career) as she had 34 assists and 10 digs.
Next up for the Mustangs will be the 2012 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament. The newly added tournament will be held this weekend Nov. 16-18. The NSIC office will determine the host school as SMSU, CU and UMD all shared the regular season title.
