FOREST CITY / STORM LAKE, IOWA - The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team finished a busy weekend schedule with the Mustangs battling Jamestown College in a dual in Forest City, Iowa and with individual wrestlers competing at the Buena Vista Open in Storm Lake, Iowa on Saturday. The Mustangs tallied nine victories in the dual match versus Jamestown to defeat the Jimmies, 42-3.
Kyle Begin shined at the BV Open as the freshman went 4-0 with two pins to take the 165 pound championship.
SMSU took nine of the ten matches versus Jamestown to take the dual by a score of 42-3. The Mustangs were led by pins by wrestlers Jake Begin and
Micah Larson. SMSU recorded two major decisions and two technical falls in the match. The 42 points was the second highest scoring output of the season, as the Mustang wrestlers tallied two pins (12), two technical falls (10),two major decisions (8), two decisions (6) and one forfeit (6).

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE BUENA VISTA OPEN IN STORM LAKE, Iowa BRACKET
Ed Reno fell in both his matches in the 133 bracket , losing the first to Alex Stepanek (Concordia Neb.) by decision, 3-1 and the ladder to Mitchell Tillwick (Midland, Neb.) by major decision, 9-1.
Caleb Smothers went 2-2 at the BV Open. Smothers pinned P. Ruiz (unattached) at the 3:42 mark. Smothers followed the winning performance with a major decision over R. Vargas (Midland, Neb.). Smothers would be eliminated from the tournament by a 5-0 decision from Nathan Ryan (Morningside). Ryan would advance to take third place in the 133 bracket.
In the 141 bracket,
Cody Reed started out strong with a pin over Damone Manning (Grand View, Iowa) at the end of the first period, 2:59. Reed would be pinned in the next match by Jay Fresh (William Penn) late in the first period, 2:50 but would win his next two matches over Daniel Arceo (Northwestern, Iowa) by pin (1:19) and Jared Somonson (Morningside) by major decision 8-0. Reed's run in the wrestle backs was cut short by Bradley Watson (William Penn) as Watson pinned Reed just 38 seconds into the bout. Reed finished the tournament with a record of 3-2, as the freshman had two pins and a major decision.
Jake Slocum went 0-2 in the 157 bracket as Slocum was beat by No. 1 seed Robert Eklund (York, Neb.) by a 3-1 decision. Slocum was eliminated from the tournament by a pin at 2:59 from Joseph Winkler (Midland, Neb.).
Kyle Begin took first place in the 165 pound bracket as the freshman was impressive with four wins by two pins, a major decision and a decision. Begin received the No. 2 seed in the bracket and was awarded a first round bye. Begin defeated Malcolm Johnson (Morningside) by major decision, 9-0 in his first taste of action. From there, Begin ripped off two consecutive wins over Tyler Schaefer (Northwestern, Iowa) (fall, 2:47) and Nathaniel Stadeker (Grand View, Iowa) (Decision, 8-7) to reach the championship match. Begin would take the title with a pin in the first period (2:27) over Zach Fishman (Northwestern, Iowa).
Travis Longtin also wrestled in the 165 bracket and finished 2-2.
SMSU (4-0) will be off until January 12, 2013, when the Mustangs will travel to Gunnison, Colorado for four duals hosted by Western State (Colo.).
