No. 6 SMSU volleyball defeats No. 20 BYU-Hawaii 3-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. – No. 6 Southwest Minnesota State defeated No. 20 BYU-Hawaii Saturday afternoon 3-1(18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18) to conclude the season opening tournament.

SMSU (3-0) stumbled out of the gates early as the BYU-Hawaii (1-2) defense stifled the Mustang offensive attack. After dropping the first set 18-25, SMSU flexed its muscles to take the next three sets and the match victory.

In the first set, BYU-Hawaii used eight blocks and a .343 attack percentage to down SMSU in the first set 25-18. It was the first and only set that the Mustangs have lost all season. SMSU's offense was held in check as the Mustangs posted a .021 attack percentage.

Brooke Burmeister recorded her 15th career double-double (16k, 12d), while freshman setter, Emilee Gutzmer recorded her first career double-double with 49 assists and 14 digs.

When a big play was needed, Devin Diedrich delivered. She made key blocks in key situations; she added 11 kills in the match. When power didn't work, SMSU used strategic dump attacks over the big Seasider blockers that fell for kills.

Brooke Burmiester, Devin Diedrich, Mary Groth and Abbey Thissen all recorded double-digit kill totals. Rachel Westby had a career-high 23 digs.

SMSU (3-0) will play Southern Indiana (0-4) on Friday, Sept. 7 at 12 p.m. at the Missouri S&T Tournament in Rolla, Mo.
