MINOT, N.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State soccer team fell to Minot State 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Minot, N.D. The second consecutive loss dropped SMSU to 3-2 overall, 1-2 in the NSIC while Minot State improved to 4-1-1 overall, 2-1 in the NSIC.
Midway through the first half, the Beavers struck first as Emilie Rebelo capitalized on a penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead. Minot State would extend its lead to 2-0 in the second half when Jamie MacFarlane's shot beat goalkeeper
Sonya Smith.
Minot State outshot SMSU 14-8 and had a 9-4 shots on goal advantage.
The Mustangs would make things interesting with an
Autumn Hayes goal in the 75th minute to cut the Beaver lead to 2-1. Hayes' goal came off a penalty kick, her second of the season.
Reigning NSIC Defensive Player of the Week goalkeeper Marie Torres was solid in the net as she fended off late SMSU attacks to hold on for the win.
SMSU will continue NSIC action on the road this weekend as they will face-off against Minnesota Duluth on Friday and St. Cloud State on Saturday. Both games are slated for 1 p.m.
