MARSHALL, Minn. - For the second time this season the Southwest Minnesota State soccer team defeated St. Cloud State at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud.
With the 1-0 victory, SMSU improved to 4-3 overall, 2-3 in NSIC play, while St. Cloud State dropped to 3-4-1 overall, 2-3 in NSIC play.
SMSU managed five shots with only two of them coming on goal but
Miranda Cadena made good of one of those shots on goal as she would score the only goal of the game in the 26th minute. The unassisted goal was Cadena's third of the season.
With the 1-0 shutout of the Huskies,
Sonya Smith recorded her third shutout of the season and seventh of her career as she improved her record to 4-3 on the season.
Sonya Smith and the SMSU defense fended off multiple late SCSU chances, including a shot from Gabby Fleck in the 90th minute. The 1-0 victory was the second win over St. Cloud State this season for the Mustangs as the first victory came on Sept. 3 in a non-conference match.
The Mustangs will return home to take on Minnesota, Crookston and Bemidji State this Saturday and Sunday Sept. 29-30, at the Regional Event Center in Marshall. Both games are slated for 1 p.m.
